Klaipėda University to generate growth: creating spaces for future medical professionals and engineers

Klaipėda University campus will soon undergo a significant infrastructure development phase – modern laboratory facilities have already been designed and they will combine a medical simulation center with engineering and biotechnology laboratories. This project is not only an investment in a quality learning environment, but also an important step in the development of innovation and research in the region.

The modern, more than 5.8 thousand square meter two-story building is planned to be built on Herkaus Manto Street, on the territory of the university. The Faculty of Marine Technologies and Natural Sciences (FMTNS) will be relocated here from Bijūnų Street. It will also include new laboratories for the training of medical and engineering students.

“This building is of strategic importance – we will have such laboratory and simulation space at the University that we have not had before. One part of the building will be dedicated to engineering laboratories and the other – to medical laboratories. The medical simulation center is of utmost importance, especially nowadays, when we have dynamic Klaipėda University Hospital in place. The knowledge acquired in the simulation center is of great importance for future doctors before they start working with patients,” says Prof. Dr. Artūras Razbadauskas, KU Rector.

The medical simulation center will include ambulance simulation areas, operating theatres, multi-purpose wards, admissions ward simulation areas, classrooms, and staff rooms.

The engineering laboratory building will include laboratories for ship design and engineering, seaport and ship model production, structural engineering and geotechnics, mechatronics and machinery, as well as study rooms, classrooms, and meeting rooms.

“The engineering laboratory building is a qualitative leap in the University’s research and study infrastructure. By creating these spaces, we are investing not only in the quality of student training, but also in the region’s potential in innovation and engineering research. It makes the University more attractive for international cooperation and business,” emphasizes Assoc. Prof. Dr. Laura Šaltytė-Vaisiauskė, Vice-Rector for Research and Innovation at KU.

The building will be adapted to the needs of all, with several elevators to ensure easy movement between floors. Architecturally, it will blend in with its surroundings, with dark red facade showcases with steel inserts and beige stone panels.

It is planned that the Government’s decision on the sale of the old KU FMTNS building on Bijūnų Street will be implemented together with the construction of the new building. The proceeds will be used to increase the University’s capital and to further strengthen the infrastructure of KU.

The project was prepared by Maspro. It has now been submitted for public consultation and the construction contractor will be chosen after an open tender.
