The Researchers Team Project “The Role of Paramilitary Organizations in the State Defence System: the Case of the Lithuanian Riflemen’s Union”

As of 1 March 2012 to 30 September 2015, BRIAI of Klaipėda University is pursuing the researchers team project “The Role of Paramilitary Organizations in the State Defence System: the Case of the Lithuanian Riflemen’s Union” funded by the Research Council of Lithuania. The project involves participation of Doc Dr Vygantas Vareikis (head of the project), Doc Dr Jonas Vaičenonis, Dr Hektoras Vitkus and Vytautas Jokubauskas, M.A. After winning in the competition of the fourth call for the Researchers Teams’ Projects tenders, the Research Council of Lithuania earmarked over 330 thousand Litas for the implementation of the project.
Objectives of the project are as follows:
1. To analyse the background that determined creation of the paramilitary organization (the Lithuanian Riflemen’s Union) and conditioned its operation in Lithuania taking into consideration the northern East Baltic and Central Eastern European contexts.
2. To identify the position of the Lithuanian Riflemen’s Union in the defence system of the interwar Lithuanian armed forces, in the context of the cases of the Baltic countries and Finland, and to determine the impact of the military training of riflemen on the Anti-Soviet armed resistance in Lithuania.
3. On the basis of comparative studies of paramilitary organizations in the countries of the Baltic Sea region, to make analysis of the ideology of sušaulinimas (joining riflemen) in the interwar Lithuania and attitudes of the Lithuanian Riflemen’s Union towards national minorities.
4. To identify the qualitative and numerical role of the former members of the Lithuanian Riflemen’s Union in the Lithuanian Anti-Soviet armed resistance through analysis and systemisation of the obtained empirical data.
5. To specify how the experience of the guerrilla resistance in Lithuania in the first half of the 20th century might be eventually accommodated to ensure military security of the Lithuanian State in the 21st century.
The implementation of the project includes annual research seminars to be held at Klaipeda University, presentation of the project deliverables in scientific research publications and at the international conferences in Poland and Estonia. It is planned to compile a nominal roll of 1939-1940 in-commission riflemen (in e-book format), which will include up to 50 000 entries of in-commission riflemen biographical and service records. The problems of military doctrine and riflemen training for guerrilla action in the interwar Lithuania will be examined in a separate monograph, which should see the light in 2014, and the research results will be summarised by the project participators in a collective work in 2015.
